And Vancouver Barracks Post to Park Decommissioning.
Memorial Day is much more than just a three day weekend, picnics, and sleeping in. Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember and honor all the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Vancouver USA will have two special ceremonies on Monday, May 28, 2012. The first Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 11 am at the Clark County Veteran’s War Memorial (Fort Vancouver Way at the Vancouver Barracks), which recognizes over 575 service men and women who gave their lives serving our country.
Immediately following (at 1pm), there will be a special Post to Park Decommissioning ceremony as the Vancouver Barracks closes as a U.S. Army Reserve post and becomes a national park. The post closure ceremony (held at the Artillery Barracks, 600 East Hatheway Road) led by the U.S. Army Reserve with the support of the National Park Service, will include traditional military elements, including the rendition of honors, honors to the nation, and remarks from several dignitaries. “In addition, staff and volunteers from the national park will provide a traditional 21-gun salute in costumes reflecting important eras in the barracks’ military history. The ceremony’s highlight will be the retiring of the Army Colors and passing of the United States Flag from Brigadier General Berry to Regional Director Lehnertz, symbolizing the final action of military personnel on Vancouver Barracks.”
There will be an opportunity for guided tours, a marching and weapons drill, firing of the mountain howlitzer, and free refreshments.
