The Goddard School, located at 13201 NE 27th Avenue in the Salmon Creek area of Vancouver, is scheduled to open summer 2012; offering early childhood education, and childcare, for children ages six weeks to six years old.

“The new state-of-the-art 8,000 square foot building is conveniently situated between Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital and Washington State University Vancouver, near the junctions of both Interstate 5 and Interstate 205; it has been designed to accommodate approximately 130 children from six weeks to six years old. The new school will offer flexible schedules for children Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Goddard School offers a year-round program where children are encouraged to develop at their own pace in a warm environment supported by a team of dedicated teachers. The Goddard School FLEX™ Learning Program is based on a unique learning continuum that encompasses developmental guidelines, formative assessments and child-focused lesson plans that are delivered in a creative and fun environment with a child-centered approach to meet each child’s individual needs.”

Michelle Solari, owner of the Goddard School in Salmon Creek, says the school will provide the community with approximately 25 new job opportunities for full- and part-time faculty members. “I am eager to welcome children into this nurturing environment with dedicated professional teachers,” says Michelle. “Along with our core curriculum, we include several enrichment programs such as foreign language and yoga which are specifically designed to encourage children’s lifelong love of learning.”

Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Park has long been a popular destination for summertime fun. With the addition of the play structure, spray feature and lifeguards, the popularity only increased.

The good news is that Klineline will be open for the summer. The bad news is that the spray feature will be off, and the lifeguards absent.

Here is an excerpt from a recent Clark County press release:

“For a second year, the county will not provide lifeguards or operate the children’s “spray ground” water feature at Klineline Pond in Salmon Creek Regional Park, 1112 N.E. 117th St., Vancouver. Swimmers, parents and anyone else using the park should review water safety guidelines and pay attention to warning signs at Klineline Pond.

“We were able to keep regional parks open this past winter and had hoped to reinstate lifeguards for the summer swimming season,” Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation Director Pete Mayer said. “But the ongoing economic slump and reduced revenues made that difficult, given other regional park maintenance and operations needs, countywide.””

Join the North Salmon Creek Neighborhood Association at the next general meeting on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, 7 pm at Riverview Community Bank in Salmon Creek.

While the Garden Police won’t be there, we will hear from Clark County Master Gardeners and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct.

Come listen to Karen Palmer, a Clark County Master Gardener, teach how we can make our gardens more beautiful, productive, sustainable, and potentially more friendly to wildlife. Ms. Palmer will discuss “Growing Your Own Garden”, including site selection, how to choose the right vegetable varieties for your garden and how to maintain your garden for high yields.

Deputy Bob Carder from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office West Precinct, will be filling us in on panhandlers, area crime statistics, recent incidents, prevention and more. Although we understand Salmon Creek is a great and safe place to live and work, it is important to learn what is going on and how we can help.

Alternative lawn care practices can be easier on the budget and healthier for rivers and streams. Native plants thrive in the right spots and are more resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Eliminating or reducing the use of chemicals makes yards healthier for families and pets, as well as for fish and other stream dwellers.

Stormwater Partners of SW Washington is a consortium involving Clark County and the cities of Battle Ground, Camas, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver and Washougal. The partnership, formed in late 2009, offers neighborhoods and businesses technical information and guidance to maintain private stormwater facilities and protect our streams.

Salmon Creek is a great place to live, work, play, and have kids go to school. There’s shopping, restaurants, a state of the art hospital, and the WSU Vancouver Campus. We’re a stone’s throw away from fun things like the Sleep Country Amphitheater and the Clark County Fairgrounds. And we have easy freeway access to both I-5 and I-205…

OK, sometimes the freeway access is not so easy, but it’s going to get better!

The Salmon Creek Interchange Project, which is currently underway, “will reduce traffic congestion and improve safety in the fast-growing Salmon Creek area by constructing a new I-5 interchange at NE 139th Street, improving the I-205 northbound off-ramp to NE 134th Street, and constructing other local road improvements”, according to the WSDOT website.

Local road improvements on both sides of the freeways is expected to be complete by Summer 2012, with the entire project scheduled for completion in June of 2014. To keep up to date on current progress, visit WSDOT Salmon Creek Interchange Project online.

Salmon Creek Community Club Neighborhood Park is at the corner of NE 159th Street and 20th Avenue in the Fairgrounds area. The 4.5-acre neighborhood park currently features trees and a small area of open lawn. Whipple Creek runs through the property along the northwest boundary and connects with the Whipple Creek Greenway to the north.

All interested neighbors are encouraged to attend the April 20, 2011 meeting at 6:30 pm at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds (17204 NE Delfel Rd, Ridgefield), where project staff will present a draft concept plan for review and discussion. Public input will be used to develop a preferred draft concept plan, which will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission later this spring.

The Spring Carnival is one of Chinook Elementary School‘s most beloved events. It brings together the while community for a day of fun, and this year that day of fun will be Saturday, June 4, 2011 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

As always, the carnival is open to everyone and is fun for all ages. Last year’s event was a huge success, and this year’s carnival promises to be tons of fun with over 20 games, six bounce houses, a BBQ, prizes, and much more!

Local chefs, local art, awards for local volunteers and benefits local children’s hunger programs.

Share’s 10th annual Share-a-Bowl Fundraising Dinner will feature gourmet soups created by local chefs, plus artisan soup bowls as a keepsake for each guest. The event will be held Sunday, April 17, at Skyview High School, (1300 NW 139th St., Vancouver). Doors open at 3:45 p.m., event begins at 4 p.m.

“We are so excited to be celebrating our 10th annual Share-a-Bowl,” said Diane McWithey, Executive Director of Share. “The event was envisioned to give the community a sense of the experience our Hot Meal Program clients have each day at Share House. And nine years later, the event continues to draw hundreds of community members each year, who are actively engaged in supporting our efforts to feed hungry men, women and children in Clark County.”

Dinner includes a variety of soup selections, salad, bread, beverages and dessert; plus each attendee will take home a ceramic bowl crafted by local artist Michael Metz. Featured chefs include: Muffin Batiste from Le Sous Chef, Stephanie Cerame from Whole Foods Market and Troy Lucio from Gray’s at the Park. Each guest will have an opportunity to sample each soup; the winner will be awarded the “People’s Choice Award.”

The evening’s program will include the presentation of the 2011 Emily Marshall Volunteer of the Year Award; this year’s nominees are Joan Caley, Vicki Erickson, Carla Feltz, Susan O’Shea, as well as David Slocum and Judy Enders

Cost to attend is $35 for adults, $15 for children ages five to 12, free for children under five; a table of 8 can also be reserved for $280. Proceeds will benefit Share’s Children’s Hunger Initiative, including the Backpack and Summer Lunch Programs, which provide food for children when school doors are closed.

Attendees are asked to bring cans of food to enter the door prize drawing. For each non-perishable food item brought, attendees will receive one ticket for entry in the door prize drawing; prize is a beautiful Spring Flowers & Gardening Basket.
