Salmon Creek Elementary Family Movie Night.

monster_houseIn the spirit of Halloween, the first Family Movie Night of the school year will be “Monster House”, playing on October 12, 2009 at 6:30 pm.  Bring your pillow and blanket, grab a spot on the floor, and enjoy the show!  The Salmon Creek PTA will also be selling popcorn and Halloween candy for those who want a little snack during the show!

Evergreen School District Employees Share.

The Evergreen Public Schools Classified Employees (Secretaries, Clerks, Bus Drivers, Staff Assistants, etc.) have felt the pain of lost jobs and reduced hours due to budget cuts and are doing something about it: Helping others.

That’s right, they are sponsoring their first ever “Stuff the Bus” event on Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Fred Meyer on 117th Avenue and Wal-Mart on 192nd Avenue (both in Vancouver, WA).  They will be accepting non-perishable food-items, toiletries, and cleaning supplies to donate to Share.

Items needed for the Children’s Backpack Program: Tuna, Dry Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Canned Chili and Soup, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Instant Mashed Potatoes, Boxed Meals (Mac-n-Cheese, Hamburger Helper, etc.), Canned Fruits and Vegetables, Cereal, Instant Oatmeal, Crackers, and Granola/Snack Bars. As these bags are being distributed to small children, no glass containers and smaller size items are appreciated.

Personal Items Needed for Shelter and Outreach: Deodorant, Disposable Razors, Shaving Cream, Soap, Shampoo, Hand Sanitizer, Hairbrushes and Combs, Individual Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Paper Towels and Bath Towels.

Community Storytimes Begin Again Throughout Vancouver.

pooh_storytimeThe popular Read and Play program, which includes stories, games and fun for young children and their parents or caregivers will resume again starting in September at the following locations:

Eisenhower Elementary, Mondays at 10 am, resumes September 14.
Fruit Valley Community Learning Center, date and time still to be determined.
Image Elementary, Tuesdays at 10 am, resumes September 15.
Orchards Elementary, Thursdays at 10 am, resumes September 17.
Sacajawea Elementary, Tuesdays at 10 am, resumes September 15.
Silver Star Elementary, Wednesdays at 10 am, resumes September 16.

WSU Vancouver Celebrates Progress

Grand Opening and Ground Breaking Event.

Washington State University Vancouver (WSU) in Salmon Creek will be celebrating two events, a groundbreaking and a grand opening,  on August 19 at 10 am.  This event is free and open to the public.  Guests are invited to gather outdoors near the Engineering Life Sciences Building.

The Ground Breaking Celebration will be for their new Applied Technology Classroom.  The new 56,000-square-foot, four-story Applied Technology Classroom building will include hi-tech laboratories and classrooms. This teaching and research facility will prepare students to meet the employment needs of high-demand fields in Southwest Washington, such as computer science and engineering.

The Grand Opening Celebration is for the Undergraduate Classroom Building. The Undergraduate Classroom building is WSU Vancouver’s first Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design-certified project, earning a LEED Silver level distinction under the Green Building Rating system. Guests at the event will have an opportunity to tour the new building.

Free Sports Physicals Offered.

Physicals are required for middle and high school students who plan on participating in intramural sports, band, or cheer.  Free sports physicals for Vancouver students will be held in four locations in August.  Download the parent permission form and call 313-1044 for an appointment. sports-images_web
